How to Install Android 4.0 'Ice Cream Sandwich' on the Samsung Galaxy Tab

Here, we'll go through the five-step process of rooting a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and loading up a ready-made ROM of Android 4.0.

Let me preface this with the obligatory warning: This process will void your warranty and you're doing it at your own risk.

Step 1. Backup Files, Factory Reset, and Install Drivers

Before beginning you will definitely need to back up any important records or files you might have on your own tablet. It's best to begin fresh new, consequently when you have saved all of your records and files elsewhere, perform a factory reset on the Galaxy Tab. You can find this option within the Settings menu, under Privacy. In case you have not already installed the Windows drivers for the Galaxy Tab 10. 1 on your computer, make sure to have them by samsung before starting.

Step 2. Download the Files You'll Need

Most of the hard work has already been done by developers, so really it's just a matter of finding the right files for your device. I suggest making a dedicated ICS folder on your PC to keep track of all the files you'll need.

You'll want a Windows utility called Odin, which will help you flash custom firmware to your Galaxy Tab.
The next thing you'll need is the ClockworkMod Recovery file.
The CyanogenMod team puts out the most popular ROMs and the one I used was based on their work. After doing some research, I settled on a build called CM9 Kang, which I found at the following link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1425631
In case you'd like the option to go back to your standard Honeycomb setup, you'll want to get the stock Galaxy Tab 10.1 ROM.

 Step 3. Install ClockworkMod Recovery

  • Click the PDA button
  • Navigate to your ICS folder and select the file recovery.tar.md5
  • Enable USB debugging on your Galaxy Tab (Settings>Applications>Development)
  • Reboot your Tab into Download mode. To do this, hold the Power and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until a screen with two icons appears. Use the Volume Down button to highlight the icon on the right, which should be an Android icon with 'Downloading' below it. Press the Volume Up button to select Downloading mode.
  • Plug the Galaxy Tab 10.1 into your computer
  • Odin should now recognize the device. Press Start

Step 4. Copy ROMs to the Galaxy Tab

After installing the ClockworkMod Recovery, keep your Galaxy Tab 10.1 plugged into your computer and copy over 'p4wifi.zip,' 'hc-3.1_ota-full_sam_tab_10.1.zip,' and 'gapps404.zip'. You can simply drag these three files to the root of the Tab's internal storage; there's no need to unzip them or place them in a certain folder.

Step 5. Install Ice Cream Sandwich

Unplug the Galaxy Tab and reboot into Recovery mode. To do this hold down the Power and Volume Down buttons again, but this time choose the icon on the left (it looks like a box with an arrow coming out of it, pointing towards a little green Android icon). This will bring you to a text-based menu for the ClockworkMod Recovery. Use Volume Up and Down to navigate and the Power button to select.

  • First you'll want to run 'wipe data/factory reset,' 'wipe cache partition,' and under the 'advanced' menu choose 'Wipe Dalvik Cache'
  • Navigate back to the main menu and choose 'install zip from sdcard,' and then 'choose zip from sdcard'
  • Now find and select the 'p4wifi.zip' file. This can take a while, so be patient. Next, do the same for the 'gapps404.zip' file

Finally, after installing both, reboot the tablet. The first reboot might take a while, so don't get too concerned. If you've done everything right, you should now have Ice Cream Sandwich on your Galaxy Tab 10.1.
